Former Pakistani PM Shahid Khaqan Abbasi Arrested

Pakistan’s anti-corruption watchdog has just arrested the country’s former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi. 

According to local reports, Mr Shahid Khaqan Abbasi was arrested in the city of Lahore earlier today. 

The National Accountability Bureau, which has been tasked to deal with corruption scandals, has arrested the former prime minister because he failed to appear before an accountability hearing.

Mr Shahid Khaqan Abbasi will now “be produced before the Court of authorization of detention for such period as may be necessary for finalization of the investigation”, as per the arrest warrant.

The proposed hearing was pertaining to a corruption scandal in the Liquified Natural Gas sector. He was instructed to appear before the National Accountability Bureau’s office in Islamabad at 10 AM local time.

In response to this arrest, many people have expressed delight at the on going efforts against corruption. People on Twitter and Facebook have stated that the National Accountability Bureau should continue its anti-corruption drive and hold everyone accountable.
