Congressional Republicans are criticising the House of Representatives’ impeachment process, stating that both articles of impeachment were baseless and unjustified. Mitch McConnell, the Senate Majority Leader, asserted that “House Democrats passed the thinnest, weakest presidential impeachment in American history”.

Mr Mitch McConnell also claimed that “Democrats seem to have buyer’s remorse about the least fair, least thorough, and most rushed impeachment in American history”.

President Donald Trump also dismissed the impeachment process against him as “an assault on America, and an assault on the Republican Party”.

The Democrats also faced trouble from their own ranks. Jeff Van Drew, formerly a House Democrat who opposed both articles of impeachment, is defecting to the Republicans. In the aftermath of the impeachment votes, Congressman Jeff Van Drew met President Trump at the White House where he told the President: “You have my undying support”.

In response to the criticism about the impeachment process, Nancy Pelosi reminded Donald Trump and the Republicans that “No one is above the law, Mr. President”.
