In direct contrast with government ministers, a great majority of the British public wants the Brexit transition period to be extended. The Brexit transition period is currently due to end on 31 December of this year.

However, the effort and resources being invested in dealing with the coronavirus pandemic means that this deadline is not practicable. Governments on both sides of the Channel are incredibly busy in responding to the pressing health emergency.

Therefore, a majority of the British public wants the current Brexit transition period to be extend beyond 31 December given the exceptional circumstances.

According to a YouGov poll conducted from 30 April – 01 May, 50% of people want the transition period to be extend while only 35% of the public wants it to be ended as planned at the end of this year.

This follows wide ranging calls from prominent journalists and politicians to extend the transition period beyond the end of this year because of the urgency with which the present pandemic must be dealt with.

Even Brexiteers are content with the idea of extending the transition period as Isabel Oakeshot, a journalist and commentator, recently stated in a tweet: “I now think it is inevitable the Brexit transition period will be extended and as a Brexiteer I am cool with this. The corona catastrophe changes everything. We have enough to deal with.”
