UN officials praise Pakistan

The United Nations has praised and applauded Pakistan for having hosted refugees for the past four decades. The United Nations’ top officials also applauded the country for its contribution to maintaining peace, as part of the UN Peacekeeping missions.

Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the UN stated in a social media post that “Pakistan is one of the most consistent and reliable contributors to @unpeacekeeping efforts around the world.”

The above statement was issued before the Secretary-General set off for his first official visit to Pakistan.

After arriving in Pakistan, Antonio Guterres also praised the country’s efforts in hosting Afghan refugees for the past 40 years. In multiple tweets, the United Nations Secretary General reminded the world of Pakistan’s generosity.

In a tweet, Mr Antonio Guterres stated: “Pakistan has stood in solidarity #WithRefugees from Afghanistan for 40 years — showing how generosity is not always proportional to wealth.”

In a further statement, Mr Guterres also said that other countries should also replicate Pakistan’s stance in welcoming and supporting refugees. He said: “For 40 years, Pakistan has sheltered Afghan refugees. I urge the world to support host countries and show similar leadership in standing #WithRefugees.”

The Secretary-General’s praise for Pakistan was also echoed by ‪Filippo Grandi, the United Nations’ High Commissioner for Refugees.

Pakistani people have welcomed the above praise from the United Nations. Politicians as well as political pundits said that it is a positive sign that the country is being recognised for its hospitality towards refugees.
