Protests continue as part of the Extinction Rebellion movement in various parts of London, especially near Trafalgar Square.

Through these ongoing demonstrations, the protesters aim to raise awareness of the detrimental effects climate change is having on the whole planet.

In a statement on their website, a representative of Extinction Rebellion wrote that these protests are necessary “because we are in a Climate & Ecological Emergency, and we need your help to make sure the world knows about what’s happening”.

In addition, Extinction Rebellion also wants the government and other policy makers to act against climate change.

Their previous protests in April were thought to be incredibly successful because of the increasing awareness of climate change among the general public.

According to Extinction Rebellion’s own data, this month’s protests have attracted many more people than the one in April. This is partly because more people are aware of the group’s agenda and more people realise the increasing urgency of needing to deal with climate change as soon as possible.

Similar protests are also taking place in other cities around the world.

Meanwhile, many people have reacted positively to the protests, especially young people. While some people did lament about traffic diversions, they nonetheless acknowledged that to instigate change sit-in protests are necessary.

However, it remains to be seen what effect the current phase of protests will have on the present Conservative government.
